When you are sailing and it isn't raining, do you keep your sprayhood up?
I've always put it down, but noticed from the photos posted in the Plotter thread (Charting & Nav room) that some other forumites keep their's up when under way. Does it not irritate you, and restrict your visibility?
Marc.

to be honest ..... can't be bothered to put it down ! Actually thinking about it - can't remember seeing a boat with it down .... except when in storage !

Sunshade, in the UK? You'll be advocating a stainless steel & canvass bimini monstrosity next !

Last year we had quite a few distinctly uncomfortable days, and I was very glad to get out of the sun.............strange isn't it that not every body is a sun worshipper.

Leave it up. For two reasons 1: it has a handrail, which when I have to go to and from the foredeck, gives a bit of security and 2: I couldn't be bothered to fold it down ;D

Ok then, I must be the exception! Strange, I really don't like them and the moment I get onboard I fold the thing down.
On the other hand, I do like the fixed screens such as the ones on the Hallberg Rassys...

I sometimes sail on a Warrior 40 that has a fixed screen. It also has a sprayhood that attaches to the top of the fixed screen. It's an absolute sod. For anyone of average height the top of the screen is right in your eyeline. So you finish up standing with one foot on the port locker and the other on the starboard, with the wheel held at the top by your fingertips. That's when you're in a close quarters situation, like a marina etc.

Must be that HRs are a better design, I've never had that problem , either that or at 1.86m I'm above average ;D

Mine stays up unless I am racing where I need all the help I can get!!! Uk weather of late seems to mean that either it's up to keep things dry or as a sunshade... nothing in between. and I am too lazy to put it down. ;D Jim

Don't have a spray hood...thems is for wimps! Wish I did have one! ;D My father refused to have one on any boat he had ... my first two boats didn't have ... my race boat not ... my weekender not ...... but my old tub - Superanne has ... and I love it !! In fact I wish I had extension pieces to make a full cockpit tent and enclose the lot when alongside ! Makes a hell of a difference to a small boat ! that additional "cabin" ... I would not have SA without ... tried it for a while when SH was away for new windows and stitching ... UGH ! But yes - visibility was great - apart from all the spray and ruggish I was then getting in face ....

Mine's almost always up as I store binocs/ nav books/ sail ties up there. Plus it keeps the wimpy family crew out of my way as they cower under it. Doesn't provide much shelter for me at the wheel tho' as I am too far back.
On the few occasions it is off or down I almost feel exposed and the vis is superb. I too sometimes need to stand on the seats to see over it when threading thro busy moorings. I am currently saving up for a full canopy or doghouse/ screen plus canopy.
The other big plus point is I don't get rain/ spray in the cabin when the main hatch is open. AND it works well with an overboom canopy to make some parts of the cockpit useable in bad weather in harbour.
