Does anyone know of ... or how to create petition to No. 10 to stop MOD looking at selling off HMS Victory ?
She is one of the finest examples of UK's history and role in the world ... she stands there as testament to UK's .... sorry to say this but "Englands finest hour" ! (No disrespect to other UK nationals intended ... )
Next the Crown Jewels will be sold off ... clear national debt I suppose !

I reckon we should cut our losses with the Cutty Sark and place Victory in Greenwich instead - the NMM can run it. Just being in London will up her viewing considerably I would imagine.

I think it's disgusting that it should even be considered ... Portsmouth was her last home base after originally Chatham. Nelson is Portsmouth ....
In UK we managed to spend god knows how much on Millenium Dome, Spinnaker Tower .... loads of useless modern crud ... but a serious piece of our History ?
Disgusting.

Disagree ref. the Spinnaker Tower. Lovely landmark and certainly better than the Dome.

Disagree ref. the Spinnaker Tower. Lovely landmark and certainly better than the Dome. The over-run money on Spinnaker Tower would keep Victory for lord-knows how many years !

It would but the issue there is the overspend rather than the actual building of the tower which looks to have given the gunwharf area a much needed face lift. Cut down all the wasted over spends and save HMS Victory. Mind you its a sad but true fact that it has no interest to many these days. I went several times as a kid and loved it. Took mine there .... not interested at all. Disagree ref. the Spinnaker Tower. Lovely landmark and certainly better than the Dome. The over-run money on Spinnaker Tower would keep Victory for lord-knows how many years !

Spinnaker Tower - you mean the millennium tower . Yep - absolutely disgusting if Victory is sold off. However I believe they are only looking at different funding options at present with one of these options being to leave things as they are. I think the question of funding is quiet valid - should MOD pay for the upkeep, or national heritage or a charitable trust? They have also stated that whatever happens she will be maintained as a commissioned warship.

I'm always wary .... things like this can easily degenerate and slide the wrong way ... look at Cutty Sark. Took a serious fire to bring to light the misconduct of some ... and lack of care. Would people want Victory to suffer same fate ?

Agreed, politicians are not well renowned for keeping their words.
I was shell shocked when I first heard the news that was reported as "Victory to be sold off". My initial thoughts were it must be a practical joke of some sort! I for one would not rest until Victory was safe if I thought her to be threatened.

I think she should continue to be a commissioned ship in the RN. That is much the safest thing for her - the Navy have the expertise to look after her and they have the motivation.
Twenty five million quid a year is not much, in the scale of things.

Not a matter of saving on the Tower to fund Victory.
£25 million a year is an awful lot of money IMO.
I am all for keeping the Victory but I reckon this is all scaremongering to get more funds for the Royal Navy and to get someone else to fund all the expenditure. Just cant see it happening!

I was under the impression that the upkeep of Victory for a standard year is 1.5m (without major work needed etc). Slightly more affordable.....
