I originally posted these photos on the YBW Classic Boat forum, but after posting some photos of Walkabout on here, I thought that maybe the SBC crew might also be interested in Violet.
My photos were taken about 9 years ago in Bequia, just before New year. I had gone rowing round the anchorage in Admiralty Bay in my little home built plywood dink, and was hailed by a chap on the Bristol Channel pilot cutter Marguerite T who was anchored up at the top end of the bay. So I paddled over to say hello - he hailed me cos I was the only dinghy he had seen that wasnt a RIB with a big outboard..... and he invited me on board to have a look round MT.
Oooh, she was gorgeous..... turned out I was talking to the Owner of Covey island Boat Works up in high Canadian latitudes - they had completely re-built her, and then headed south for the winter....
John then told me about Violet, a restored Scottish Zulu on the other side of the bay - she had be re-built by a chap called Gary Maynard.
'Not Gary who sailed round the world with his family on a Spray replica when he was a kid?'
'Yes, thats him'.
I had met them (and their engineless Spray called 'Scud') in Barbados in 1974. She was a true replica - no electricity even, just oil lamps - and family of 5 plus a big dog living on board....
So I then paddled over to say Hi to the Violets..... Gary was quite surprised to bump into a scruffy Bajan last seen in Bim 24 years previously..... and I was also invited on board to have a look around.
And Violet was (is) another work of art - just beautiful.
Here are a few of my photos below - the first is Marguerite T :
And here are a couple of Violet :
While here is a lovely one from an article in Wooden Boat by Gary describing in detail his restoration of Violet :
That fisherman anchor is either the kedge (150 lbs) or the main (200 lbs)........
For reference, this is what Violet looked like before Gary acquired her :
If anybody would like a copy of the article from Wooden Boat about Violet, I have it scanned and saved, and can email it to you, no worries.
Violet is currently for sale, for US$ 195,000 with Bill Cannell - here is (I hope) a link to her :

Thats only GBP 100k - just compare Violet with what you could buy for 100k in fibreglass these days.....
