Well the NOK (Nord-Ostsee Kanal) as the Kiel Canal is called in Germany is in fact NOT part of the sea neither apply "interior waterway rules". It has its own set of rules (for instance distance measuring with kilometers instead of nautical miles). To get through the NOK is quite easy actually. You enter the lock in Brunsbüttel/Kiel-Holtenau fasten your boat and drive into the canal once the lock is open again. When through, climb up the ladder and pay your fee at the office. Important to know: 1. pleasureboats are only allowed to be in the canal during daytime, so one usually stops for the night in Rendsburg (half way through) 2. you are only allowed to go max. 15 km/h 3. you are not allowed to sail, but you can put up a sail as assistance ... 4. ahh - yes, I forgot. drive on the right side More information here (english/german): www.kiel-canal.org/english.htm
