What chemical eats carbon? The heat exchanger in my cabin heater is a bit chocked up with carbon and needs cleaning out.

What chemical eats carbon? The heat exchanger in my cabin heater is a bit chocked up with carbon and needs cleaning out. You're lucky ... I have BOTH my Lab specialists in office today .... so I asked them ... First answer .... big hammer ? Both agreed ...... 5 - 10% solution of Hydrochloric Acid in water ......... or wait for it ..................... Oxalic Acid diluted down ..... (remember to these they have access to "solid pure Oxalic Acid" which needs preparation .... and is strong !) I described the gel type in UK ... they reckon to water it down to flow and pass it through repeatedly ... But best they say - if you can put together a safe tank etc. is Hydrochloric acid route ...

Used to use caustic soda to clean out 2 stroke bike exhausts in the "olden days"!

I have a big tin of Oxalic Acid powder which I used with wallpaper paste to clean the hull. I'll try some in the heater.
