I totally agree ..... I've always taken the views :
Size is Might
Better to live another day
I was only passing info about radar beams and their actual shape and errors. Some assume that radar is a pencil beam that is exact and focused, there were many at sea in the early days that thought Radar was the gods gift ........ along came the RAC .... Radar Assisted Collision. People were cutting corners, passing closer etc. I 'grew up' on ships with Masters of both schools ... those that switched it off in good weather and away from coast, others who insisted it stay on at all costs ... ACAS / MARPA was in it's infancy then with some bizarre machines coming from respected companies !!

interesting info thanks the other consideration is more weight up the top of the mast changes the righting moment. I think the ratio of weight effect at the top of the mast as opposed as balast is 10:1

What a brilliant load of information and thoughts...
I think I will not fit a Radar Reflector this year. My maintenance budget has run out anyway! I will do it next year. Maybe there will be a test that shows a new reflector has passed the new June 2009 recommendations. And the whole Righting Moment brings up a load of new questions....
I might get a large 'Davis type' that I can hoist if I need to (or if I am asked to....)
Generall I keep a good lookout and run away if in doubt!!

I would think that generally situation hasn't changed much. Very little evolution of reflectors - so matter stays same.
When people ask me about reflectors and what to use .... I often point at the channel marker buoys to enter a harbour. They have the Rain-Catcher Octa reflectors mounted.

Hi everyone.
Yes, Nigel, those rain catcher types are easy as they fold down flat. I like the long ones that look like foil wrapped in a clear plastic case. I bought a couple at a boot sale years ago but I still need to hang them in the rigging. Mine are about 2 feet long and about as thick as your wrist. I plan to hang two where I could hang a burgee. Maybe this year I'll get around to it ....
Fair winds to all

I have one of those tubes on a flag halyard ..... it keeps the local 'experts' happy and stops them telling me me to hang something !! I have found that it grows mould inside though ! But its easy to dismantle and then a good spray of alcohol (Hand cleanser) and careful wipe does the trick.
