Of all bits of kit you can put on / fit to / carry on your boat - whether you have or not ..... what do you consider the most desirable ? (We assume boat is sea-worthy and basic kitted out).
For me ? It's the Tiller-pilot !!

No good without the bottle though. Screw top bottle of wine? ;D More seriously for me, it is sun-cream. I have the kind of skin that burns whatever the weather! Marc.

Actually, in terms of 'Kit' my Leatherman is probably the one thing I really miss if I don't have it on me when sailing! Although I'm sure it will attract some head shaking and "tuts" of disaproval, as it isn't a 'proper' sailing knife...
Marc.

The remote control for my Autohelm. Means I can still steer the boat no matter where I am.

Two answers, one large, one small:
1. A nine foot clinker stem dinghy, with daggerboard and sailing rig, that I can stow on the coachroof.
2. Another vote for the Leatherman.

My budget is unlikely to ever stretch to radar, power consumption on a small yacht is also a problem. The other snag with radar is that unless you spend plenty of time practicing it's use you ain't ever going to make proper use of it.
AIS however is a different matter.....
I know we hear now and again of a ship's AIS not having been set up correctly, or not switched on, but I've sailed in The Humber with a river full of commercial stuff and been very impressed.
How many of us would admit to missing something on the radar, or know that we had?

Top of the "kit I haven't got" list is a new engine. Volvo made good engines back in 1968 when they shipped out MD2 no. 5420 but its 39 years old, overheats and is frankly underpowered for modern conditions.
The dream is a 40-50hp diesel driving a hydraulic pump which is connected to twin motors driving twin folding props and another on the windlass. I've seen this done, on the bawley "Bona" and the smack "Transcur", and its brilliant! Transforms an awkward old boat into one that can motor into a marina, spin on the spot and back into a finger pier just like that!

For me..... Just to have an engine that doesn't rattle ones teeth and allows conversation would be nice! ;D Jim Top of the "kit I haven't got" list is a new engine. Just a rather mundane item : Lock & Lock plastic containers. I keep food in them, bread, potatoes, veg, coffee, sugar, tea, and even batteries. They manage to keep the sugar dry even after 6 months. Magic

Magic When I was connected to Scouts ... I did all the rope walkways / aerial ropeway stuff for them ... and orienteering etc. I had a pass for a place near Ron hales Outboard Shop at Southsea - the Charity Crafts shop ... They collected together all items that you could use for crafts - empty containers, braid, cloth .... you name it literally .. and Scouts / Schools etc. could gather up loads of stuff free of charge. Well I got a load of matching screw top plastic jars just right for tea, sugar, coffee, nuts, bolts .... etc. etc. I also got very strong braid ........... strip material suitable for tell-tales - replacement for those awful chandlers rubbish .... computer patching cables .... amazing !!

I would say my copper ship's kettle. Boils in half the time of an electric one. Really impressive.

For me its GPS.
The absolute luxury of knowing at a glance precisely where I am. Easily taken for granted if you've never navigated by log and bearing compass alone.
