Please excuse Me if this is not the correct place to put this! Anyway Here goes I bumped into an old mate last night As yer do in the Pub! Anyway we got talking as yer do Only had two pints cos of driving so I do remember what was said Anyway Peter is an expert saily bloke I,m a mobo bloke Only two times I have sailed and one was with Searush 'Searush' that's a laugh We went out a couple of years ago with no wind Searush was great but the wind God's stayed at home Anyway Me mate has offered to teach me to sail a Raggie Whatsit, Racing too! It's a Scandanavian 27 footer (that's all I know for now) which I have serviced (engine) for Him previously. Out of Holyhead on Wednesday evenings (not tonight was in the Pub agin) ;D If I remember correctly It has a throttle yer works by yer foot an a big stick to steer with Bloody Nora! Now I need some tips If we are a bit behind can I just stick the engine on fer bit, if I,m at the back of the fleet and the wind is in the 'wrong' direction they won't notice will they? Or is that a sneeky mobo type trick?

Well, so far I've learnt there are 3 types of wind. Too much Not enough Wrong direction Hey! I,ve heard that before somewhere! But any of it is better than listening to a bloody engine! ;D Now I love engines. Be they single pot Petters or Multis that go betters. I have been told by Saily types that all is serene and wonderfull under cloth It seems this invitation to sail will be on an evening of 'racing'. I say 'racing' in commas Surely a race cannot be 'raced' whilst competitors are serene and wonderfull. Cor! I,m looking forward to next Wednesday

Racing is usually anything BUT serene etc. ! Having raced and had reasonable success I add ..... racing is a mad rush and can get pretty 'heated' ... Adrenaline - that 'livener' is rarely talked about in terms of sails, but a hard-on race boat ... even a cruiser when pressing the limits can have the heart pounding, adrenaline on free-flow etc. Go and enjoy ... you never know, you might enjoy it !! ;D

The strange thing is, I love engines! In cars, in bikes, the bigger the better. Love the sound of a V8..... Real sports have engines involved, others are just "games". My car's got a 3l V6, and I'll spend all day on the boat happy at walking pace, then jump in the car and thrash it all the way home. ;D, Didn't have a car until I was 28, always had bikes, thrown a few down the road. But on the water, sails do it for me, and no racing thanks. Still not worked that one out......

TBH, when we went out, Rich, there was SOME wind, but the wind & tide were from the same direction. Given tide strengths in the straits it hardly any surprise that we simply tacked across the strait & back again losing all the ground we gained to the tide on each tack. then Richard wa scalled home for a minor emergency so he missed the bit where the tide changed & half a dozen glorious tacks took me home to caernarfon - one of the best sails I had had for ages.
Racing ain't necessarily fast, but it will be furious. I never met so many stressed people going nowhere. that's why I don't race. Races are often won by using the rules to gain a benefit over your colleagues who then suffer heart attacks. Be warned, a lot of the "action" will take plce in the bar & the committeee room.
As a crew member & an avid observer of life, you will find it great fun.

Not like you to be a Cynic mr searush. You could argue if you don't ever race, you'll never learn to tack well, & then when it comes to tacking in tide, you'll end up in irons or in the mud or others the rocks. & you'll be too embarrassed to go to the bar ;D & yes cruising is best, but then you're always racing the boat or ship next to you sorry for using this one again TBH, when we went out, Rich, there was SOME wind, but the wind & tide were from the same direction. & yes cruising is best, but then you're always racing the boat or ship next to you I think that's very true! I spend most of my time asking myself "why are they faster than me ? ;D As for racing, I prefer to learn much more slowly and without any shouting... week ends are to short to get stressed!

Or is that a sneeky mobo type trick? So Kwaker go's saily boat racing round the cans at H.H. ;D Bin there don that on a Wednesday and weekend. It can get a bit tricky coming out the end of the harb wall in a strong westerly in close harmony but thats the fun in it. We used to join in the weekend races and if it was a crap race for us we would head off to the IOM for the weekend instead. O one thing you must not do in a saily boat race is wag the tiller "big stick to steer with" to much you will be accused of "ouching" trying to make the boat go by the trust off the rudder. ;D Just wish I could get there and come with you be a nice change from all this mechanical work I am involved in at the moment. Anyways have fun. Please try and take some pics.

I have been told by Saily types that all is serene and wonderfull under cloth Don't believe it. It's all shouting, tutting, red faces, grinding teeth and hard stares. And that's just learning to potter up the harbour under sail... heaven knows what attempting to race will be like! What you need to do though as a first-timer sailor with plenty of experience of boats that go where you point them is to take with you a variety of broken, twisted or mangled shackles, bottle screws, clevis pins, blocks and the like, ideally with some frayed bits of expensive rope around 1 to 3ft in length. You should keep these concealed about your person (it's why ocean sailing jackets have lots of pockets) and produce them whenever things seem particularly tense or shouty but otherwise not interesting enough. Hold an item out at the skipper, look perplexed and say something like "it just came off", "Sorry... I wound like you said and this unthreaded" or "this fell on my head". It should liven things up no end... ;D

I need to know the correct gesticulations when 'ticky takin'or 'gyberin' across a mobo's bow please. Oldsalt I will take a camera and hide it about me But I dunno how to do piccies on Forums So, you now 'contrated' to show me how when the time comes innit! Don't suppose I,ll get to hold the stick at the back for a while So that's me up the pointy end holding some string then I suppose

You'll likely be a winch monkey. heaving on the sheet when she tacks. Lots of hard work & people shouting "Not yet" Hurry up, what you waiting for?" and "More, MORE" or Not that much!"
